Astral Clearance Hiyak Shoe
The Hiyak is a super grippy, fast drying water and river shoe.
The Hiyak is Astral’s view of a proper bootie. It offers ground-conforming stability, foot protection and insulation without neoprene. The result is a lighter, more durable, fast drying water-boot with phenomenal gripping powers.
Flex Grip Outsole
- This rubber allows excellent flexibility and sensory feedback for heightened grip and balance. Maximised surface area for high friction on smooth surfaces. Derived lugs for substantial grip on loose dirt. Razor Siping maximised edges that bite into surface upon flexion.
Water Ready
- All Astral shoes have a special relationship with water. Every component, from the thread to the laces are critically evaluated and chosen for its ability to hold up to constant soaking, to shed water, and not to accumulate funk. Many models have engineered drainage for water to come out while minimising entry of silt.
Balanced Geometry
- Astral believe that a foot's position in a shoe should be similar to when barefoot. This allows excellent balance and a bio mechanically natural lifestyle. Foot beds are essentially level (only 1mm drop from heel to toe) and provide medium arch support. A tapered instep and heel provide better foothold and control. A wide forefoot also allows your feet and toes to spread out for stability.
- The "ss" is for "Super Sticky" and Astral confidently say that outsoles made with it provide the best grip in water sports. Unlike other maximum friction compounds, G.ss is non-marking and provide good abrasion resistance. Its low durometer (measure of hardness) lessens impact and provides excellent conformity to surfaces.

Good sticky soled shoes, flexible and not bulky inside the boat, quality is a little lacking, overall pretty good
Ok, so they're funny looking, kinda like a driving boot - you're not wearing these to the pub. But thats ok, cos they're the best kayak shoes I have ever worn, better than the raslers, better than the brewers, better than 5.10 canyoneers. They don't turn into buckets of sand like the rasslers, they're low profile enough to fit in my Freeride (but definitely not my squirtboat), comfortable as and warm enough without being foot saunas. The grip is as you would expect, and I find the closer fit more rock shoe like that the other Astral offerings, better for more technical scouting, maybe a bit thin for staggering in to backcountry steeps.
No idea how long they will last, in general I have had a good run with Astrals but I know some folks go through them in a season - roll the dice and find out, definitely worth it.
On sale definitely 5 stars for the coin
